Bond's latest ill-fated girl Vesper (Eva Green) wore Santa Maria Novella's Melograno (aka pomegranate) cologne in Casino Royale --you see the bottle's telltale green label near the end, when [spoiler alert!] the heartbroken 007 goes through her purse in Lake Como after her unfortunate death. But anyway. The historic Italian apothecary's new eau de cologne was meant to be called Tabacco Toscano, I gather, but so as not to scare off the women from its unisex intentions, it's now simply called Toscano ($110 for 100ml exclusively at Noor, 1-866-710-6667). Whatever the name, the scent was inspired by Italy's famed Toscano cigars (as smoked by flinty Clint Eastwood in his many tough-guy movies) rolled in Lucca near the apothecary's headquarters. For business guys looking for a unique signature scent, this is a brilliant choice. Unlike other colognes, this scent stays true to its first impressions: light tobacco mixed with amber and vanilla. It's subtle but very masculine. 3 / 4 nosesShe Says:This smells more like fragrant pipe tobacco than a cigar, maybe an aromatic apple and cherrywood blend or a tin of premium blond tobacco flake and honey. I don't agree with Dave: I think the amber finish is too buttery sweet, even if it is light, and would probably make a man smell of vanilla cupcakes. For women, however, the tobacco is just dirty enough and I love it. More macho cigar aficionados in search of tobacco notes should reach for the brand's more unusual car-themed Nostalgia cologne instead. Or not: this colonia stays close to the skin and has little staying power anyway. 3 / 4 noses |
